today was an interesting and freaky day at work...

we were using a hoist to lift a patient, when we noticed sparks coming from the hoist, suddenly there was smoke everywhere and then... whoosh flames... the hoist had caught alight...

i discovered that electrical fires smell really bad... and the smoke stays on your clothes...

luckily the patient didn't get hurt.
i just inhaled a lot of smoke, which of course made my cough worse :\

the sparks and fire was kinda pretty thou...

I once had a jackhammer short out on my leg. First thing I remember was a weird smokey smell and then the next thing I know the power chord is on fire and melted straight out onto my jeans, still on fire. Scared the bajesus out of me, with a live power chord on my leg, I can't imagine how I didn't get electrocuted but i did jump 10ft in the air anyway. Single scariest thing ever to happed to me at work.

So electrical fires: Pretty, when its not happening to you. Oh and they STINK.

good thing was that the hoist wasn't connected to mains power, was running off a battery

Pure electrical fires/shorts smell quite good, just like a lightning storm before the rain smells good... Unfortunately what you got to smell was a plastic/rubber/epoxy insulation fire with a little electrical short thrown in for good measure (your description of sparks tends to suggest that it was the motor brushes shorting which would make it smell more of the epoxy insulation of the motor windings). Given that the smoke from burning epoxy/plastic is toxic I hope that, in a hospital of all places, they gave you a bit of oxygen to help cleanse your lungs.
